Bringing the Revolution to Life: My Week at the “Shots Heard Around the World” Teacher Institute

This past week, I had the incredible opportunity to participate in the “Shots Heard Around the World” teacher institute—an immersive four-day professional development program hosted by the American Village Citizenship Trust and Troy University. Alongside 40 other passionate educators from across the country, I dove deep into the pivotal events and ideals of the American Revolution—not just through lectures, but through meaningful, hands-on experiences designed to bring history alive in today’s classrooms.

One of the highlights of the week for me personally was being invited to speak during a session with fellow educators. I shared the story behind my middle grade historical novel, Saving Dr. Warren…A True Patriot, and spoke about the importance of helping students emotionally connect with history—not just as a collection of dates and battles, but as a story of real people, real sacrifice, and lasting ideals. It was incredibly rewarding to engage in discussion with educators who are so dedicated to making history meaningful and accessible for young learners.

During my time there, I was honored to host a book signing for the attending teachers. Hearing how many of them were excited to bring Saving Dr. Warren into their classrooms was both humbling and energizing. As someone who writes to inspire patriotism and curiosity in young readers, it was a powerful reminder of the ripple effect that passionate educators can have.

Throughout the week, we explored everything from the Boston Tea Party to the Battle of Bunker Hill, and discussed ways to teach complex concepts like liberty and resilience to ten-year-olds. Each session deepened my admiration for the teachers around me and reminded me how many stories from our nation’s founding are still waiting to be told.

I can’t recommend this institute highly enough. Troy University and the American Village created something truly special—an experience that went far beyond professional development and into the heart of what it means to teach and preserve America’s story.

To those I met along the way: thank you for your questions, your enthusiasm, and your dedication to helping the rising generation. I left inspired—and I hope you did, too.
